Q: During Setup, I was asked to reboot. I did. Now what?

A:  Some system files used by the setup program for GEDClean32 are newer than those shipped with the original Windows 98. Setup will detect this and upgrade any outdated system files (usually the file upgraded is "oleaut32.dll"). If these files are in use (and they usually are), you will have to reboot before this upgrade can complete. Then, you have to start Setup again.

To re-start setup after your computer has rebooted, just remove and re-insert the CD. If this doesn't run the "autorun" program, click the start button, select run, then type D:\autorun.exe (replace D with the actual drive letter for your CD-ROM.)

Q: When I click View Manual after inserting the CD, it doesn't display properly.

A:  Your system may already have a program that will try to display Microsoft Word documents. If your system uses WordPad, the images may not display, there will be no breaks between pages, and (depending on the system) there may be only one or two pages displayed. If your system uses a version of Microsoft Word prior to Word 97, then you may see "garbage" characters.

In either case, the solution is to install the Microsoft Word 97 Viewer, which is the third option on the menu that displays on inserting the CD. If your system does not run the "autorun" program when the CD is inserted, click the start button, select run, then type D:\autorun.exe (replace D with the actual drive letter for your CD-ROM.

If you have an earlier version of Microsoft Word, you will be asked whether to use the Word 97 Viewer whenever opening word documents. Although this will make the GEDClean32 autorun program correctly display the manual, you do not have to select this option. You can always start the Word 97 Viewer, then open the manual.doc file on your CD-ROM, and skip the autorun program altogether. This way, documents written with your version of Word will open properly when you double-click them.

Q: The Setup program finished, but nothing else happened.

A:  GEDClean32 has been installed. To run it, click the Start button, then click All Programs, and you should see an icon labelled GEDClean32. Click it.

Q: The Download Failed, or the CD won't work. What now?

A:   This software is not available for download, only as an e-mail attachment or on CD. If you ordered an e-mail copy, but never receivedit, then either your e-mail provider, or the e-mail software on your computer, is blocking attachments. Contact us and we can confirm whether or not this is the problem.

We use only the highest-quality, name-brand CDs, and triple-test them prior to shipping. However, we have had a very few reported cases where a specific CD player cannot read our CDs. If the CD appears to be blank, or your system is unable to properly read it, try the CD in another computer.

If either of the above problems persist, see our Refund/Exchange Policy page for information on getting a Free replacement.

Q: How do I Remove (un-install) GEDClean32?

A:  Start Control Panel by double-clicking on My Computer, then Control Panel. Within Control Panel, double-click the program icon labelled Add/Remove Programs. Single-click GEDClean32 to select it, then click the Add/Remove... button.

Q: Why do I get a message that says No Records were marked as 'Living'?

Q: I entered !ALIVE tags in my data, why aren't they being "cleaned"?

A:  The GEDCOM standard is very easily extended, and many programs make use of special extensions and features when creating GEDCOM files. Some of these extensions and features are not understood by other programs, such as GEDClean32.

It is not uncommon to have several options when creating a GEDCOM file. For example, Family Tree Maker version 6 (FTM 6) displays this window to allow you to select options. For GEDClean32 and many other GEDCOM utility programs to work properly, you need to select the options as shown Here. Other programs will have similar options. In general, try selecting a lower-numbered GEDCOM version, or other "compatibility" modes, if this type of problem occurs.

An uncommon source of this problem is a GEDCOM file without complete end-of-line markers. Most Windows applications produce, and expect to see, a "Carriage Return" (CR) marking the end of each line. However, many Macintosh programs, and a very few Windows programs, mark the end of a line with a "Line Feed" (LF) character only. (I'm told a Windows product called "GeneWeb" does this.) GEDClean32, and other Windows programs, will see this entire file as one very long line. So to GEDClean32, there are no lines in the file with valid information in them.

To test for this problem, open the GEDCOM file using Notepad. If it all runs together with no line breaks, it has no CRs. One fix use the DOS "Edit" command to open the file, make one minor change (like replace a character with itself), and re-save the file.
